Steamboat Springs Stage Race Labor Day Weekend

The 2nd annual Steamboat Springs Stage Race will be held September 3rd, 4th, 5th, & 6th, 2010 and will feature four days of high-paced road bike racing.Course will include a Friday time-trial, Saturday Circuit race, Sunday Road Race and Monday Criterium.

Due to the success of our first year, the organizers behind the Stage Race have launched a new race club called Steamboat Velo and will also be promoting a Cyclocross Race on September 11th. The goal with all of our efforts is to grow competitive cycling through events, education and racer support.

Registration for this year’s race ends Wednesday. The cost is $140, and riders can register at www.bikesteamboat.com

Late Thursday, Piscopo confirmed that pro riders Timmy Duggan and Jake Wells will be among this year’s racers. Duggan is a member of the Garmin-Transitions team, and Wells rides for Mafia Racing.

“Other professional riders have expressed an interest in racing,” Corie Piscopo, promoter for the Stage Race said. “We’re waiting for commitments.”

The route of the Sept. 3 opening stage — the Aspire Individual Time Trial — has been altered. It will begin past Brooklyn and head south on River Road to Chuck Lewis State Wildlife Area before turning back. Riders then will head up Mount Werner Road and finish at Knoll Parking Lot.

Saturday’s event will be a circuit race at Marabou Ranch. Sunday is a road race that goes varying distances, depending on race category, along Routt County Roads 33 and 27, with Monday’s finale being a Criterium race that runs counter-clockwise on Oak, Pine, Fourth and Eighth Streets in downtown Steamboat.

Part of the event’s appeal is that it’s open to amateur racers, unlike many stage races. Piscopo said the biggest age division is men’s 35 and older amateurs.

Steamboat's Labor Day Weekend is packed with events. The Wild West Air Fest features remote controlled and vintage aircraft, war birds, classic cars, hang-gliders, para-gliders, First Friday Art Walk, great shopping deals and a working dogs competition! Not to mention, all of the outdoor activities, hot springs and Western hospitality Steamboat is known for!

  • Wild West Air Fest: The Wild West Air Fest line up includes a number of spectator friendly aircraft events including a vintage aircraft and Warbird fly-in and static display at the Bob Adams Airport.  In celebration of their 50th Anniversary the Bob Adams Airport will host up to 25 vintage planes and Warbirds as well as other unique aircrafts from the World War II era. Vintage aircraft and helicopter rides  will be available as well as demonstrations by the brand new Cirrus Design piston aircraft. This interactive exhibit will be complimented by two remote control aircraft shows each day that spectators will not want to miss. In addition to vintage planes, the newly formed Steamboat Springs Car Club will have a variety of vintage cars on display.
  • Hang Gliding Event: The delight of air flight continues into the afternoon at the Steamboat Ski Area when 30 hang gliders and paragliders take to the skies as they launch from 9,080 feet on Mt. Werner and soar to the valley floor.  Catch the excitement from their launch spot at the top of the Steamboat Gondola.
  • Steamboat Stock Dog Challenge: Beginning on Saturday 8am-5pm, you can see working dogs herd sheep lead only by whistle and hand commands from their trainers at the Steamboat Stock Dog Challenge. You will be amazed with the teamwork and the smarts these dogs have!
