Steamboat Events and Activities: Week of Sept. 10-16, 2010

The air is slightly cooler in Steamboat these days but fall hasn’t quite reached these mountain peaks. Here are some events and activities coming up this weekend and the next week that we think you shouldn’t miss! Check out the full event calendar or the Steamboat Pilot for more information.

Friday Sept. 10
  • The Rowdy Shadehouse: Ghost Ranch Saloon, 9 p.m.
    Denver-based funk rock. FREE. 56 Seventh St.
  • Blue Krewe: The Tugboat Grill & Pub, 9:30 p.m.
    A Colorado-based Louisiana blues outlet, Blue Krewe, plays jazz and funk with swampy roots influence. Tickets are $5. 1860 Ski Time Square Drive.
Saturday Sept. 11
  • Mainstreet Farmers Market: Sixth Street, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.The final Mainstreet Farmers Market features produce, food vendors and crafts. Kirk Martenson plays live music from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. FREE. Sixth Street downtown between Lincoln Avenue and Oak Street.
  • 23rd annual Yampa River Rubber Ducky Race: Brooklyn Bridge at Fifth Street, 10 a.m. Watch as 2,500 rubber birds float down the Yampa River, and buy your own “ducks” to benefit the Healthcare Foundation for the Yampa Valley. Tickets are $10 and will be sold from noon to 6 p.m. today at Safeway and City Market, at the Healthcare Foundation today and near the Fifth Street Bridge on race day. Ticket holders with the fastest ducks win prizes.
  • The Knew with The Fling: Ghost Ranch Saloon, 9 p.m.
    Denver-based indie pop punk artists The Knew just released a 7-inch EP in the wake of their 2010 full-length release, “Pulperia.” An emerging rock act in the indie scene, The Knew is fresh off an appearance at the Mile High Music Festival and the Monolith Festival. The Fling, an indie-pop outfit from Long Beach, Calif., also plays. FREE. 56 Seventh St.
  • Kirk Martenson and Friends: Old Town Pub, 9:30 p.m.
    High-energy acoustic rock from local artists. FREE. Call 970-879-2101.
Sunday Sept. 12
  • Live Trivia: Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant, 6:30 p.m.
    Test your nonessential knowledge in four rounds of questions, with categories including sports, history, food and music. FREE. 628 Lincoln Ave.
Monday Sept. 13
  • Taming the Mind, an introduction to meditation: Bud Werner Memorial Library, 7 p.m. A secular introduction to finding freedom in meditation and calming the mind with Tim Olmsted in Library Hall. FREE. Call 970-846-2699. 13th Street and Lincoln Avenue.
  • Open Mic Night: The Boathouse Pub, 8 p.m.
    Paul Geppert hosts an open mic night. FREE. 609 Yampa St
Tuesday Sept. 14
  • Live Music: Saketumi, 5 p.m.
    Locals’ night includes food and drink specials and live music with Eric Delaney and friends. FREE. 1875 Ski Time Square Drive.
Wednesday Sept. 15
  • Megan Burtt: The Boathouse Pub, 9 p.m.
    Vocalist and guitarist Megan Burtt plays folk-pop with an edge. FREE. 609 Yampa St.
Thursday Sept. 16
  • Jewelry design workshop: Steamboat Arts & Crafts Gym, 6:15 to 8:30 p.m.
    Work on new designs and concepts in homemade jewelry with Monique Payne. The class is $50 and materials range from $10 to $40. 1280 13th St.
  • Mad Dog and the Smokin’ J’s: Ghost Ranch Saloon, 9 p.m.
    Blending gritty rockabilly and driving country-punk, drummer Mad Dog leads the Denver-based trio with the dynamic spirit of rock ’n’ roll. FREE. 56 Seventh St.
  • Speak of the Devil: Old Town Pub, 9:30 p.m.
    Rock out to a local metal band. FREE. 600 Lincoln Ave.

Steamboat Happenings: Upcoming events for Jan. 9th -15th

The Bryan Joyce Band: 10 p.m. The Boathouse Pub : Yampah and 6th FREE.
Local musician Bryan Joyce, who plays bass in the folk rock band Missed the Boat, shifts to the guitar for his rock ‘n’ roll band. 609 Yampa St.

SUNDAY Jan. 10th:

Live Music from Paul Geppert: Steaming Bean Café : 9 to 11 a.m.: FREE!
Grab an awesome cup of coffee to sip on while listening to Paul Geppert who is a local folk, bluegrass and acoustic musician who performs regularly with the groups Cornbread and 3Wire.. 635 Lincoln Ave.

Reverend Horton Heat : Ghost Ranch Saloon, 9 p.m. $25/$29

Hamilton Loomis: The Tugboat Grill and Pub: 10 p.m.

SKI JAM:
T-Bird and the Breaks : Bear River Bar and Grill: 3 to 6 p.m. FREE!
The nine-piece R&B band T-Bird and the Breaks plays a brand of doo-wop soul rock that draws on a steaming horn section, searing vocals and a driving beat that produce a soul sound that’s as authentic as can be. FREE and is guaranteed to anyone with a Ski Jam festival pass. People without a festival pass will be allowed in early, until the venue starts to fill. Bear River Bar & Grill is in Gondola Square at the base of Steamboat Ski Area.

The Wailers, w/ John Tyler and The Northern Lights:The Steamboat Music Tent: 6pm
Returning to Ski Jam after performing hits from the legendary album “Exodus” in 2009, The Wailers offer a traditional reggae vibe with an easy dance vibe. Tickets for the concert are $20, and full festival passes are $59. SKI JAM continues:
Keller Williams
: Music Tent : Doors open at 7 p.m.: $15 pre-sale
One-man jam band Keller Williams comes to Steamboat promoting his new album, “ODD,” a mash of acoustic styles, funk rhythms and wry lyrics. Go to skijam.net purchase advance concert tickets or purchase a full festival pass for $49. Passes are $59 after Jan. 6.

“Mine” Screening: Depot Art Center: 7 p.m. Free!
“Mine” is set in post-Katrina New Orleans, and uses a documentary style to follow people trying to reunite with their pets in a city torn apart by natural disaster. Directed by Geralyn Pezanoski, “Mine” won the audience award for best documentary at the 2009 South by Southwest film festival. Admission to the screening is free. The event is part of the Bud Werner Memorial Library and Steamboat Springs Arts Council Third Friday foreign and independent film series. The screening also includes a short film and popcorn; the Arts Council will run a cash bar.
