New Year’s Eve in Steamboat Springs: Fireworks, Music & More

Steamboat will be bringing in the New Year with Ski Town USA style and a little Western grace. Head up to the Gondola Square to watch the Sprint Torchlight Parade and Firework display. The Steamboat Ski & Snowboard school hosts this event with a spectacular on-snow parade down the mountain! The only light guiding them down the run is the torches and maybe some light from the moon! After the torchlight parade a fireworks display will light up the Steamboat Ski Resort to bring in the New Year! This event is free and open to the public and the best viewing is in Gondola Square. The parade begins at 7:00pm.

In downtown Steamboat, head to the Ghost Ranch Saloon at 9:00 pm, to see Missed the Boat, a home town Steamboat band, who recently recorded their debut album “Rollin”, that was also nominated for the 2010 Grammy's in 4 categories! Missed the Boat plays through out Colorado with their unique Americana-Rock sound and is taking the Colorado and National music scene by surprise.

Also head over to Mahogany Ridge for a different sound from Peace Officer- show starts at 10:00 p.m. Peace Officer is a live-band hip hop crew from Fort Collins, Colorado, playing their own brand of socially conscious dub-oriented music.

And last but not least head to the Old Town Pub to hear James and the Devil - show starts at 10:00 pm. James and the Devil has an original style with spin-offs of Rock'n'Roll sounds with MountainGrass, funk, hip hop, and rhythmic dance chemistry that makes you want to move!

Come to Steamboat for the New Year and receive great lodging deals with ResortQuest Steamboat that will make 2010 begin a little sweeter!

Steamboat Opening Day on Thanksgiving; Scholarship Day tomorrow!

Fellow Steamboat twitterers were chirping excitedly over the past few days about the snow storm this weekend in Steamboat Springs, with snow reports ranging from a foot to 7 inches. Whatever the total, the snowstorm that lasted most of Monday has ensured that the Steamboat Ski Area is on track to open nine runs for Wednesday’s Scholarship Day (tomorrow!!), the traditional first day of the ski season.

Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. spokeswoman Loryn Kasten said consistently cold weather during the past weeks and new equipment have created good conditions to fill the lower runs on Mount Werner.

The Christie Peak Express and Preview lifts will serve green runs Yoo Hoo, Boulevard, Right-O-Way, Preview and Stampede; blue runs Jess’ Cut-Off, Sitz and Vogue; and black run See Me on Wednesday, with more trails opening as soon as they are ready.

Ski Corp. reported that this is about the same amount of terrain opened for Scholarship Day in previous years, but improved snowmaking equipment has created a better base.

It's not too late to book your thanksgiving vacation in in Steamboat Springs and give thanks to the Old Man Winter for such fabulous Opening Day conditions! ResortQuest ensures that you not only get an exhilerating holiday weekend on the slopes, we're also treating you to a thanksgiving meal provided by our favorite gourmet get n' go kitchen, Drunken Onion. Steamboat’s Men Get Dressed Up for Outside Magazine

Anyone who has ever lived in, or even visited Steamboat Springs, CO, knows that Steamboat is relaxed, Steamboat is gorgeous, and Steamboat is home to some of the most handsome men in all of Colorado’s ski towns. Outside Magazine realized it too and November’s issue features 4 Steamboat locals who got all dressed up for Outdoor magazine’s Style section.

Olympian Todd Lodwick, rancher Jerad Iacovetto, Honey Stinger sales manager Adam Spector and golf pro Luke Brosterhous were the four local hotties who didn’t even know they were so hot. Lodwick said Thursday for the Steamboat Pilot, “You know the economy is going to pot when a Nordic guy is on the cover.” The group spent a day shooting at the Steamboat Ski Resort back in April. All were amazed by the photo shoot set up including the massive amounts of expensive clothes. “They made us all look a lot better than we do,” said Adam Spector.

These modest men remind us of the charm, and the down-to-earth qualities that still linger in Steamboat Springs, CO. It is a town made up of hard workers who like to play as hard as they work. "We'll gladly suffer high mortgages," says Luke Brosterhous, "so we can ski 100 days per year."

It’s time to escape to Steamboat! Book your Steamboat vacation with ResortQuest for the best Steamboat lodging packages.

What's on in Steamboat Springs July 10-16, 2009

It's just about the greatest weekend of the Steamboat summer. This week is jam-packed with events and activities. Rather than post the entire line-up, here is a link to the Steamboat Pilots events schedule. There's just too much going on to post! Enjoy!

My tips for the perfect day during the Steamboat Balloon Rodeo Weekend

This weekend is one of my two favorite weekends in Steamboat Springs. The Hot Air Balloon Rodeo and Art In The Park weekend. The weekend is jam-packed with stuff to do to embrace Steamboat's fabulous natural resources, activities, events and shops.

Rise early to catch the Hot Air Balloon rodeo at Bald Eagle Lake on the edge of town. ResortQuest is providing our guests with a complimentary shuttle to-and-from the event from Trappeur's Crossing Resort and the Torian Plum.

Don't forget your cameras. Personally, I prefer to bike to the launch field, and then I gradually make my way down the bike path to find different spots to capture the gorgeous scenery and colorful balloons through the lens of my camera. Last year the Rotary Boardwalk, just off the core bike trail was a fabulous spot. A couple of balloons dipped down into the river right in front of me! As the balloons slowly land, make your way to Breakfast. My favorite haunts are Freshies, Creekside Cafe, Wenonas or the Shack. If you want to soak up the sunshine, then Creekside Cafe is the pick! Alternatively, buy a pastry at the Farmers Market next to the Old Town Pub on 6th Street.

From here, I usually take a quick mountain bike ride up Howelsen Hill. If you're lucky, there may be a few balloons still floating over Steamboat.

Now that you have worked up an appetite, you could make your way to Art In The Park. Look out for the Greek Gyro stand. Since you have been on your bike all morning, you may even indulge in a funnel cake. Spend the afternoon strolling around the art and craft stalls.

If you have energy to spare, you could freshen up by tubing on the Yampa River. There are a few businesses on Yampa street that rent tubes and provide a shuttle to bring you back to downtown Steamboat.

Finally, stop by Sunpies or the BoatHouse alongside the Yampa River to quench your thirst. Be warned: Sunpies is famous for their 'Hurricanes' fondly referred to as Slurricanes. They're deliciously sweet, refreshing and dangerously easy to drink!

Upcoming Events at Steamboat Strings In The Mountain's Music Festival

The Steamboat Strings In The Mountains Music Festival is officially underway, after a opening fabulous weekend filled with performanaces by the Strings Orchestra and Four Bitchin' Babes. Check-out some of the upcoming Strings events. Don't forget! Book your Steamboat Springs summer vacation with ResortQuest and you can get free nights and up to $100 in free spending money - which can be used towards Strings tickets!

The Neville Brothers

The Neville Brothers perform at 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 2 and Friday, July 3 in the Strings Music Pavilion. Reserved seating tickets are $75, and are available at Strings Music Festival (970-879-5056 x105, http://www.stringsinthemountains.com/ or the box office)

The Neville Brothers have honed a style that is soul and jazz and blues all wrapped into one legendary sound. Raised in New Orleans’ Thirteenth Ward, these four brothers reign as the Crescent City’s first family of funk. Together, they are what Billboard calls “a sound and energy that has come not only to reflect that of the city, but also define it.”

For two nights right before Fourth of July, expect fireworks to fly onstage at the Strings Music Festival as the Neville Brothers perform in what is arguably the festival’s biggest production to date. Their solo projects have astounded fans and critics for decades – but as a family, the Neville Brothers create what has been called “the funkiest sounds this world has ever heard.” Hurricane Katrina brought the brothers into the limelight in another way, as they’ve devoted months to benefit concerts for their devastated hometown: “My profile and the profiles of my brothers have been raised by the storm. People all over the world see us as the face of New Orleans. They want to hear us play. They want to feel that we've survived the storm. They want to be assured that life goes on,” says Aaron.

“The Neville Brothers are not just local heroes. They're an institution. They've been the closing act on the biggest stage at Jazz Fest for as long as I can remember,” said Scott Aiges, program director for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation which puts on that city’s iconic music festival every spring. “What kind of impact did Bob Marley have on Jamaica?” he asks. “(The Neville Brothers) are kind of like that.”

Leahy: Neo-Celtic Superstars

Leahy performs at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 10, in the Strings Music Pavilion. Reserved seating tickets are $55, and are available at Strings Music Festival (970-879-5056 x105, http://www.stringsinthemountains.com/ or the box office).

“(Leahy’s) approach seems so gloriously free of commercial pollution … this is an act whose music is invigorating,” says Los Angeles Times. While their roots are Irish and Scottish, Leahy’s musical range spans from near-symphony to lightning-fast fiddling and ballads with penetrating vocal harmony. Their albums have been called a mixture of rock, pop, Celtic, classical, folk, country and traditional dance music – an ideal melting pot in the genre known as World. Some of their music is written collaboratively; other times it’s the product of a single Leahy sibling. But it’s all finished off with a group vibe at The Farm, their home studio in Lakefield.

“Their live performance makes Riverdance look like Lawrence Welk re-runs,” says Time Out New York.

Summer Classical Series

Strings Music Festival continues its Summer Classical Series with concerts on Wednesday, July 1, Wednesday, July 8, and Saturday, July 11.

Wednesday evening concerts have taken on a new format this summer. These concerts feature 90 minutes of excellent music with no intermission and an informal reception after the concert to meet the evening’s performers.

Beginning this new format on July 1 is a concert featuring Chee-Yun, violin, Mary Bonhag, soprano, Wendy Chen, piano, Evan Premo, bass, and Todd Reid, drums. They will be performing pieces of Beethoven, Bach, Bernstein and Bolling. Also featured is a piece composed by Mr. Premo, as well as Chee-Yun playing electric violin on Schoenfield’s Who Let the Cat Out Last Night? and Polonaise Brillante in D Major, Op. 4 by Henryk Wieniawski.

The second Wednesday classical concert of the season is on July 8, featuring new Strings Music Director Andrés Cárdenes, violin, Arturo Delmoni, violin and viola, Aloysia Friedmann, viola, David Hardy, cello, Jon Kimura Parker, piano, and Jason Vieaux, guitar. They will be performing pieces by Spanish and Italian composers, including Gaetano Pugnani, Francisco Tarrega, Isaac Albeniz, and Paganini, as well as Dohnanyi’s Piano Quintet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 1.

Saturday, July 11 is the second Strings Festival Orchestra performance of the summer season. Featured is piano soloist Jon Kimura Parker performing Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto with the Orchestra. The other pieces performed are Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s Trittico Botticelliano, based on the paintings of Botticelli and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat Major for Violin, Viola and Orchestra, K. 364, featuring conductor Andrés Cárdenes on violin and Arturo Delmoni on Viola.
