Steamboat Ski Resort Receives Honors for Zero Waste Initiative.

The Steamboat Ski Resort has received the CLIF BAR Silver Eagle Award for Waste Reduction and Recycling, announced during the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) Convention this week.

The Ski Resort’s newly established Zero Waste Initiative promotes composting and recycling at all the Resort’s dining establishments. The initiative was started in 2009 with the goal of composting all organic material and the mountain restaurants use reusable products like silverware and non-disposable plates.

The Ski Resort has teamed up with the local landfill to create the pilot composting system for all of Routt County and works with local community organizations to help them integrate similar zero waste programs. See what ResortQuest Steamboat does to be Green.

"The success of our Zero Waste Initiative would not be possible without the efforts of our staff, which accepted this new program with open arms and continue to help educate our guests,” said Chris Diamond president and chief operating officer for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation.

What to do: Compost, Recycle, or Landfill?
When on your next ski vacation at the Steamboat Ski Resort, after you have had an awesome burger or BBQ sandwich, and you are going to throw away your remaining scraps and plates, you will see three different types of trash bins: Compost, Recycle and Trash.
  • Compost is for all items that can biodegrade in a compost system so all food scraps, paper plates, corn based compostable cups (these are different than reg. plastic cups) and utensils, paper napkins, etc.
  • Recycling: Steamboat’s Recycling accepts plastics #1-7, cardboard, soda cans, glass etc.
  • Trash: Trash is for all the others…candy bar wrappers, heat packs & wrappers, sunscreen tubes, etc.
If you are unsure about what can be recycled just ask a restaurant employee. They are trained and will be able to direct you to the right receptacle!
